Lady Luck likes her broad genre of music (Pop/rock, Chinese, Classical) played truthfully with minimum colouration and without imposing characters from the system. In her long search (and research), she finally assembled this simple but formidable system, in fact, her very first system!
The hi-fi is placed in a small, untreated room, measuring only about 3m or less on each side. This raised some eyebrows when she picked a pair of Coincident floorstander with side-firing woofers! .
Lady Luck is certainly on her side when the first note is fired. Playing in an almost bared room, with most equipment just out of the box, there was NO irritating runaway low frequencies, NO glaring highs but some good sonic foundation with potential to become a little giant-killer. How so?
Clearaudio Concept turntable with AER Disc Energizer by the side.
The little WhestTWO (on the left) is overshadowed by the Marantz CDP in size only. This little LP system was a knockout. Coincident Extreme Interconnects are used for linking the CDP to the amp and Studio Connections Reference Plus Interconnects take care of the very small signals from the phono stage to the amplifier.
Audio Research VSi60 integrated amplifier. This 50w remote controllable amplifier uses the latest KT120 output tubes that replace the prior version’s 6550. This amp is powerful yet refine.
This very handsome Coincident Super Victory II in Natural Ash finish, is placed just half a meter from the back wall. With the side-firing woofer placed inwards, the bass energy is neither excessive nor inadequate. Coincident Super Victory II floorstanders have been known to do well in small rooms, without using big amps and this is aptly demonstrated here. Studio Connections Reference Plus speaker cables are deployed.
As is, this lively system throws a deep and wide soundstage with good dynamics. With gradual room treatment (e.g. window curtains), continual run-in and our revisit to fine-tune speaker placements, this system has all the ingredients to punch above its weight.
